Our theme for Summer 2011 was LANGUAGE! This theme was inspired by our 2 field trips to the Park Avenue Armory to see the Royal Shakespeare Company perform Hamlet and Comedy of Errors. It was a once in a lifetime experience to watch the world’s most famous Shakespearean actors perform here in NYC! We then created our own version of the Hamlet script that was half Shakespeare’s language and half our own writing which we titled “To Be or Not To Be.” We worked with Park Avenue Armory teaching artist, Vickie Tanner, to create sound/rhythm/movement poems for each character from Hamlet. NBC News featured Brooklyn Youth Company in a news story about our version of Hamlet and this story ran on Taxi TV for the entire month of August. Click here to watch the news story.
Exploring a combination between classical and modern storytelling, To Be Or Not To Be brings Hamlet into the 21st Century while staying true to its Shakespearean roots.
